South Africa Ranks Among the Most Stressed Countries—Time to Relax?

The Global Stress Crisis Impacting Families

Stress affects everyone and is a part of everyone’s life. Economic instability, violence, and even long work hours are some of the factors that contribute to overall stress. According to new research, South Africa is one of the most stressed-out nations South Africans face.
Personally, dealing with burnout has taught me that stress can be overwhelming. Balancing family and financial obligations feels impossible to tackle. Being able to identify the issue is a major step towards achieving equilibrium.

Why Is Stress So Prevalent In South Africa?

South Africa grapples with an unemployment crisis along with rampant inflation. On top of that, the government enforces strict taxation policies that stifle the greater South African region. A few key factors that amplify the prevalence of stress include the following:

Economic Challenges

Financial recovery these days is near impossible due to the violent crime wave hitting the South African region. The constant mental strain and hyperawareness needed to simply exist drain mental energy.

Extended Working Hours

The annual working hours average is already alarmingly high. Coupled with a lack of paid time off, chronic burnout emerges as a leading health risk, often resulting in severe mental harm.

Surrounding Danger

Being on constant high alert leaves the mind feeling fatigued. This adds to the already highly prevalent emotional distress caused by mental clutter.

Remote Showcase Ruining The Work-Life Balance

With most seeking fresh opportunities abroad, remote roles are filling up significantly. This leads to people overworking themselves, and in turn causes people to burn out and become injured mentally.
Products such as the Controlio app may assist in tracking employee productivity, but excessive screen time can become a source of stress instead of alleviating it.

In Search of Balance in a High-Stress Environment

You should not have to bend over backward trying to alleviate stress. Here are a few simple ways to take back your peace:

  1. Self-Care Comes First
Little things go a long way. I suggest taking a few minutes to engage in 10-minute guided meditations or going for walks. Personally, I like to do some breathing exercises in the morning because it keeps me level-headed throughout the day.
  2. Set Limits at Work
It may be the case that you are completely drained at the end of a long workday, in which case I would recommend giving time-blocking a try. Make sure to take breaks at certain durations and enforce them. Always keep in mind that productivity should not be synonymous with quantity; smarter work leads to more productivity.
  3. Keep in Touch
Make sure to stay in touch socially, as that provides the most value. It can be family, friends, or even very distant relatives, but sharing problems always helps you carry the load.
  4. Recharge by Disconnecting
After work hours, turn off all notifications. Your mind and anxiety will greatly benefit from mental resets.

Final Note: Slowing Down is Absolutely Acceptable

Although society is currently highly stressed, it is not bound to this reality. The proactive strategy, coupled with identifying triggers, guarantees a happier and healthier routine.
South Africa might face high levels of stress; however, it is undeniably a resilient nation.
By changing your mindset or work habits, using relaxation techniques like mindfulness, or using control tools such as the Controlio app, which manages screen time, you can regain control of your life.
